Chandan R. Narayan is an Associate Professor of Linguistics at York University's Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, where he directs the Speech and Psycholinguistics Lab. His research examines speech perception, acoustic phonetics, and language acquisition, with focus on infant speech perception and historical sound change.
Education includes a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan (2006) and undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley. Current research includes cross-linguistic studies of infant-directed speech, acoustic-perceptual explanations for historical sound changes in Dravidian languages, and bilingual lexical access.
Research bridges laboratory phonetics with psycholinguistics, investigating how speech perception develops in infancy and how acoustic properties of language input influence phonological development and historical language change.
