Allan Friedman serves as Lecturer in Music at Duke University's Trinity College of Arts & Sciences since 2024, directing the Duke Chorale. He holds a D.M.A. in Choral Conducting from Boston University (2005), M.A. in Musicology from UNC Chapel Hill (2001), and B.A. in Music from Duke University (1999). His expertise spans choral conducting, Jewish liturgical music, and South African musical traditions, with a focus on bridging cultural and religious divides through music.
Dr. Friedman has led the Duke Chapel Music program as Associate Conductor (2004–2012) and currently directs SONAM (Singers of New and Ancient Music) and serves as Director of Music at Judea Reform Congregation. His artistic works emphasize multicultural collaborations, social justice themes, and innovative liturgical practices. He teaches courses in conducting, musicology, and choral performance.
His compositions blend traditional sacred forms with modern techniques, reflecting influences from Russian Jewish choral traditions to South African vocal ensembles like Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Recent works include A Seal Upon Your Heart (2018) and Erev Shabbat and Torah Service (2016), showcasing his commitment to accessible, community-centered music.
As an educator, Friedman mentors undergraduate voice majors and graduate conducting students, emphasizing ethical leadership and inclusive pedagogy. His career highlights include over 20 years of teaching at UNC Chapel Hill and Boston University, alongside leadership roles in choral organizations across the U.S.
