Allaine Cerwonka is a senior leader at The Alan Turing Institute, where she has directed international partnerships and large-scale data science research programs since 2017. Previously, she served as Dean of the School of Social Sciences at the University of East London (until 2018) and Founding Director of the Science Studies Programme at Central European University (until 2013). Her interdisciplinary expertise bridges AI, ethics, and public sector applications.
Her research interests focus on adapting data science and machine learning to enhance resilience in governmental, clinical, and scientific systems. She actively convenes initiatives in digital human rights, RRI, and AI ethics, aligning with the UK’s AI Strategy and global technology policies.
At the Turing Institute, she led the UKRI-funded AI for Government & Science (ASG) program (2017–2023), which addressed critical challenges in public sector AI integration. She has also collaborated with Oxford University’s International Gender Studies Centre and Jawaharlal Nehru University as a Senior Fellow.
