Dr Yang Lu is a Senior Lecturer specializing in artificial intelligence, privacy, and digital transformation for social good. Her research is driven by interdisciplinary collaborations funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), the UK Space Agency (UKSA), and the United Nations, aiming to develop inclusive, sustainable, and ecologically just digital technologies.
Her educational background:
- PhD from the University of Melbourne: Research focused on AI-driven privacy mechanisms for health data exchange across hospital systems.
Dr Lu's research interests encompass human-centred AI, trust and ethics in technology, and intelligent systems for behaviour change. She applies these across diverse domains including sustainable energy consumption, sustainable food systems, space applications, and digital rights. Her technical expertise spans Cyber Security, User Privacy and Human Factors, Semantic Web and Ontology, Data Security Governance, Trustworthy Autonomous Systems, and Responsible and Ethical AI.
She has secured major research funding from UKRI, EPSRC, STFC, UKSA, and the United Nations, with notable work at the Alan Turing Institute analyzing epilepsy patient records to identify socio-economic barriers in NHS access. Dr Lu actively translates research into policy-relevant impact through her affiliation with the Networks and Systems research group.
