Professor Marion Oswald MBE is a Professor of Law at Northumbria University and Senior Visiting Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute's Centre for Emerging Technology and Security. Her research focuses on the intersection of law, digital technology, and AI in policing and national security. She leads major UKRI-funded projects including the PROBabLE Futures initiative examining probabilistic AI in law enforcement. Key roles include Chair of the West Midlands Police Data Ethics Committee, member of the Home Office's Biometrics and Forensics Ethics Group, and former Specialist Adviser to the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee.
Education: PhD in Law (2020), Law LLB (1991), Solicitor (non-practising). Awards include MBE (2022) and Honorary Fellowship from the Royal Statistical Society (2025). Research emphasizes ethical AI governance, data-driven policing practices, and legal implications of emerging technologies. Current projects include the Observatory for Monitoring Data-Driven Approaches to COVID-19 and contributions to national policy consultations on AI in criminal justice systems.
