Alixe Bovey

Alixe Bovey is a Professor of Medieval Art History at The Courtauld Institute of Art, part of the University of London. She previously served as Head of Research (2015–present) and Executive Dean/Deputy Director (2020–2025). Her academic career includes roles as a curator at the British Library (2000–2004) and faculty at the University of Kent (2004–2014). As of Spring 2025, she will become Editor-in-Chief of British Art Studies.

Education:

• B.A. in History and Medieval Studies, University of Victoria (1995)
• M.A. in Art History, The Courtauld Institute (1996)
• Ph.D. in Art History, The Courtauld Institute (2000)

Research Interests:

• Medieval art of Northern Europe (1100–1500)
• Illuminated manuscripts and visual storytelling
• Myth’s intersection with material culture
• Word-image relationships and public/private devotional art

Advising & Service:

• Supervising doctoral students on topics like Hebrew manuscripts, genealogical rolls, and Gothic ivories
• Member of Canterbury Cathedral’s Fabric Advisory Committee and the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England
• Academic Board member of The Art Academy

Current Activities:
