Dr Alistair Hunt is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Bath, where he has specialized in Environmental Economics since 1998. He serves as Research Coordinator for the Department of Economics and maintains affiliations with multiple research centers including the Water Innovation and Research Centre (WIRC), Centre for Climate Adaptation & Environment Research (CAER), Centre for 21st Century Public Health, and Institute of Sustainability and Climate Change. His work contributes significantly to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action and sustainable cities.
Dr Hunt's research focuses on two primary areas:
- Non-Market Valuation: Monetary valuation of disutility associated with morbidity and premature mortality, energy and transport externalities, green accounting methods, ecosystem valuation, and economics of crime
- Project/Policy Appraisal: Cost-Benefit Analysis, portfolio analysis, and Real Options analysis specifically in climate change contexts
His recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on climate policy uncertainty impacts on Chinese economic development, corporate governance, and green innovation. He has published extensively on urban health, environmental regulation, and adaptation finance through interdisciplinary collaborations with European and global research teams working with major organizations including the EC, OECD, World Bank, and UNEP.
Dr Hunt has supervised 6 research students and currently leads or contributes to multiple significant projects:
- Tackling the Root Causes of Unhealthy Planning (MRC, 2019-2025) as Principal Investigator
- Health Hub: Systems Approaches to Commercial Determinants of Health (MRC, 2024-2028) as Co-Investigator
- ESRC IAA - Cost-benefit analysis of alternative parental leave policies (2025) as Co-Investigator
- Wellcome Trust project on health and sustainability in urban development
