Alistair Hamilton is a Professor at Scotland's Rural College (SRUC), where he specializes in Environmental & Countryside studies within the Rural Economy Environment And Society school. His roles include managing MSc programs and teaching modules in GIS, Environmental Law, and field skills. He has extensive experience in applied ecology, rangeland management, and interdisciplinary environmental research, particularly involving UAV/drone technology for land-use and ecological monitoring.
Education: PhD in Ecological Science from the University of Edinburgh (2001), BSc in Ecological Science (Hons) from the University of Edinburgh (1994).
Research interests focus on applied ecology, spatial data analysis, and the use of drones for environmental monitoring (e.g., pest detection, flood modeling). He collaborates on international projects, including Thai initiatives using drones to combat pesticide overuse. His work integrates ecological modeling with socio-economic perspectives to address land-use policy challenges.
Key publications include studies on peatland vegetation classification via UAV imagery, herbivore grazing dynamics in peatlands, and environmental justice in Indonesia’s policies. Recent projects include modeling land-use impacts on greenhouse gases and natural capital in Scotland.
Awards include the 2023/24 Research Supervisor Award and the 2019 Sir Stephen Watson Prize. He supervises 6-8 MSc dissertations annually and co-leads PhD projects on biodiversity, soil remediation, and UAV applications in land management.
