Alistair Fraser is a Professor of Criminology at the University of Glasgow’s Department of Sociological & Cultural Studies. He previously held an Assistant Professorship at the University of Hong Kong’s Department of Sociology. His research focuses on youth violence, gangs, organized crime, and global criminology, employing ethnographic and interdisciplinary methods. Fraser leads projects funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and collaborates with institutions like the Scottish Government and the University of Hong Kong.
Notable achievements include authoring Urban Legends: Gang Identity in the Post-Industrial City (OUP, 2015) and co-editing the Routledge International Handbook of Critical Gang Studies. He has received awards for teaching excellence and scholarly contributions, including the British Society of Criminology Book Prize.
His recent work examines public health approaches to violence reduction in Scotland and Hong Kong, and explores how illicit labor intersects with urban change. Fraser contributes to public discourse through podcasts, BBC broadcasts, and collaborations with museums for youth engagement.
