Professor Alison Venn is an Adjunct Professor at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research, University of Tasmania. She holds the title of Distinguished Professor Emerita and has served as Director of Menzies (2016–2022). Her expertise spans epidemiology and chronic disease research, focusing on cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity. She leads large-scale cohort studies like the Childhood Determinants of Adult Health (CDAH) and collaborates internationally through the i3C Consortium. Venn has received awards including the 2021 University of Tasmania Research Medal and a mentoring award from the Australasian Epidemiological Association. She has secured over 79 grants, including major NHMRC partnerships, totaling millions in funding. Her research emphasizes translational public health strategies, policy development, and reducing health disparities.
Education: PhD (Immunology, 1986) from the National Institute for Medical Research (UK), Graduate Diploma in Epidemiology (1991, University of Melbourne), and BSc Hons (1983, University of London). She has supervised over 30 doctoral and master’s students, focusing on topics like bariatric surgery, air pollution effects, and osteoarthritis biomarkers. Key collaborations include work on keratinocyte carcinomas, vitamin D supplementation trials (D-Health), and cardiovascular risk prediction models.
