Alison Gill is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Humanities and Communication Arts and the Institute of Culture & Society at Western Sydney University. With over 25 years in design education, she focuses on sustainability, community repair practices, and the socio-material impacts of design. Her research explores fashion theory, material culture, and transformative pathways for sustainability in urban contexts.
Education: PhD (2002, University of Sydney) in 'Wearing Clothes'; B.A. (University of Sydney).
Research Interests: Her work spans design pedagogy, sustainable design, and critical fashion studies. Key projects include co-editing Design/Repair: Place, Practice and Community (2023) and exploring social practice theory in design. She investigates community repair networks, circular economies, and the role of design in mediating social relations.
Awards: 2013 UWS Learning and Teaching award for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning.
Advising & Grants: Supervises postgraduate students in diverse methodologies. Active in academic integrity committees and the Digital Humanities Research Group. Collaborates on projects like Commoning Riverlands and repair economies.
Labs/Teams: Co-leads initiatives like the Institute of Culture & Society and contributes to interdisciplinary design research networks.
