Professor Alison Gwilt is a leading academic in sustainable fashion and textile design at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Faculty of Arts, Design and Architecture. Her research focuses on sustainable design interventions to transform clothing production and consumption paradigms, particularly through circular economy principles and textile longevity.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Design from RMIT University (Thesis: 'Integrating sustainable strategies in the fashion design process')
- BA (Hons) in Fashion & Textiles Design from Central St Martins College of Art & Design, London
Her work spans interdisciplinary collaborations, exploring human-centred design, bio-textiles, and regenerative practices. She has authored influential books including 'Shaping Sustainable Fashion' (2011), 'Fashion Design for Living' (2015), and 'Global Perspectives on Sustainable Fashion' (2019), and co-edited titles on environmentally sustainable manufacturing and the creative arts.

Alison supervises doctoral candidates researching textile waste circularity, mycelium-based bio-textiles, ethical design frameworks, and innovative practices like 'sloppy stitching' for reclaiming craft knowledge. She has led grants such as the 2025-2028 Australian Research Council project on 'Redesigning Clothing Waste' and the 2021-2022 UNSW ADA Research Fellowship.
