Alison Futrell is an Associate Professor at the University of Arizona's Department of Classics & Religious Studies within the College of Humanities. Her research focuses on the discourse, performance, and imagery of power in imperial Rome, particularly examining spectacle, gender dynamics, and the intersection of ancient practices with modern media. She has authored influential works including Blood in the Arena, The Roman Games, and co-edited The Oxford Handbook of Sport and Spectacle in the Ancient World.
Her work extends to analyzing representations of antiquity in contemporary media, such as films about Spartacus, HBO’s Rome, and the TV series Xena: Warrior Princess. She has contributed to public-facing media like National Geographic, BBC History Extra, and History Channel’s Colosseum series. In 2023, she co-presented at SXSW as part of the University of Arizona’s Wonder House, discussing historical gaming projects like the Age of Empires IV enhanced experience with Paul Milliman.
Futrell currently teaches courses on Roman history, Cleopatra’s legacy, and the Roman Empire’s evolution. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges classical studies with modern cultural analysis, reinforcing her role as a prominent scholar in ancient Mediterranean studies and their modern reinterpretations.
