Alina Ball is a Clinical Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, where she serves as founding director of the Social Enterprise Clinic. This innovative in-house corporate law clinic uniquely integrates transactional legal practice with critical analysis of racial and social justice frameworks.
Her educational background includes:
- LL.M., Georgetown University Law Center
- J.D., UCLA School of Law (with Critical Race Studies specialization)
- B.A. in Mathematics and Spanish, Wellesley College (with Latin American Studies concentration)
Professor Ball's research examines how transactional lawyering intersects with economic justice and social movements, establishing her as a leading scholar in law and social entrepreneurship. Her critical legal theory work fundamentally challenges traditional corporate law paradigms through racial and social justice lenses.
Her distinguished recognition includes:
- 2015-16 AALS Bellow Scholar award for corporate representation advancing safe drinking water access in rural communities
- 2018 AALS Shanara Gilbert Award for advancing racial justice through clinical legal education
As Social Enterprise Clinic director, she mentors law students in providing transactional services to social enterprises while developing pedagogical models for justice-centered legal education. She currently co-chairs the AALS Committee on Lawyering in the Public Interest and serves on boards of racial justice nonprofits including Public Advocates.
