Alicia Sliwinski is an Associate Professor in Global Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University's Faculty of Arts. Her research intersects anthropology and humanitarianism, focusing on moral economies of aid, post-disaster reconstruction, and the dynamics of hope and utopianism in Central America and Cuba. Fluent in English, French, Spanish, and Italian, she employs qualitative methods to explore social inequality, ecological grief, and community participation in crisis contexts.
- PhD in Anthropology (Université de Montréal, 2005)
- M.Sc. in Anthropology (Université de Montréal, 1996)
- BA in Art History (Université de Montréal, 1991)
- Post-graduate diplomas in Social Anthropology (University of Sydney, 1992) and Management (École des Hautes Études Commerciales, 1998)
Her research examines the ethical dimensions of humanitarian action, particularly how communities navigate post-disaster recovery. Current work investigates rural farmers in Cuba, analyzing shifting economic lives and utopian aspirations. Earlier projects explored qualitative fieldwork friendships, neutrality in aid, and the politics of housing reconstruction in El Salvador.
While no formal scientific awards are listed, her publications reflect sustained contributions to anthropological theory, disaster studies, and critical humanitarian analysis. She previously worked as an international development consultant, informing her interdisciplinary approach.
