Alice Spiers is a DPhil student at St Anne's College, University of Oxford, and a Non-Stipendiary Lecturer in Undergraduate History. Her research focuses on re-historicizing religion and gender in medieval Europe, particularly examining how modern categorizations influence interpretations of historical religious texts and figures. She is affiliated with St Anne's College and teaches courses in medieval history, historiography, and gender studies.
- Education: Current DPhil student at the University of Oxford.
Her doctoral thesis, Re-historicising Religion: Orientating Mystics and Their Writing in the Contextual Milieu, c.1250-1350, re-examines key medieval mystics (Richard Rolle, Henry Suso, Mechthild of Magdeburg) through interdisciplinary and contextual lenses to challenge traditional historiographical frameworks. She emphasizes integrating socio-political and cultural contexts to understand religious life as embedded within overlapping communities.
Teaching responsibilities include modules on medieval Christendom, historiographical approaches, and female mysticism in the High Middle Ages. Her work prioritizes deconstructing imposed categories to foster a more integrated understanding of the medieval past.
Supervised by Dr. Amanda Power, her research contributes to critical debates on conceptualizing religion and gender in medieval studies.
