Her research explores intersections between performance, digital media, and societal issues, with a focus on dance film, artist parenthood, and health advocacy. She has presented globally at venues like the Embodied Voices Conference (Warwick University) and the Performing Care Conference, addressing topics such as embodied pain ethics, work-life balance in creative professions, and long covid’s impact on artistic practices. Marshall authored Entertainment in the Performing Arts (Routledge, Taylor & Francis), interrogating the nature of entertainment through a performative lens. Her creative works include Tender Steps, a dance film raising awareness of babyloss, and Long Covid Diaries, a civic-engagement project displayed at the Museum of Making. She actively participates in pedagogical initiatives like the University of Derby CivicLAB, merging academic research with public engagement.
Her work frequently bridges art and social justice, using performance to address underrepresented narratives. Recent projects include Harmony in hues, analyzing creative parents’ work-life dynamics, and the Creative Parent Symposium, fostering dialogue among artist-parent communities. She has also contributed to pandemic-era discourse via virtual symposiums on sustaining creativity during crises. Marshall’s interdisciplinary approach spans choreography, digital projection, and participatory art, reflecting a commitment to both scholarly inquiry and community impact.
