Alice Bowen

Alice Bowen is a Senior Lecturer (Research) in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Manchester. She holds a Royal Society/EPSRC Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship and a CAMS Analytical Trust Fund Fellowship. Her research focuses on pulsed, dipolar, and optical pump-probe EPR methods, with expertise in method development for chemical and biochemical systems. Prior roles include a Marie Curie GO-IN fellowship at Goethe University Frankfurt and a postdoctoral position at Oxford University.

Education: DPhil (PhD) in Chemistry from Oxford University, postdoctoral training at Oxford and Goethe University. She joined Manchester in 2019 via the Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw Fellowship.

Research emphasizes EPR spectroscopy applications including quantum systems, molecular conformation analysis, and biophysical interactions. Key projects include developing X-band EPR cryoprobe technology and photoswitchable spin labels like I₂BODIPY. Her work bridges quantum chemistry, materials science, and structural biology.

Awards include the IOP/RSC NMR-DG Prize (2022), Royal Society funding, and EPSRC support. She co-leads the EPSRC National UK EPR Facility and actively collaborates across Europe on EPR method development.

Advisory work includes supervising at least one doctoral project. Her lab focuses on advancing magnetic resonance techniques for studying complex biomolecular systems, with recent datasets published on Figshare detailing spin label design and quantum dot characterization.
