Christiane Timmel is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oxford and Co-director of the Centre for Advanced Electron Spin Resonance (CAESR). Her research integrates Spin Chemistry and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) methodologies to investigate spin phenomena in chemical and biochemical systems.
- Research Focus: Magnetic field effects on radical pairs, avian magnetoreception via cryptochromes, and spin dynamics in molecular electronics.
- Collaborations: Peter Hore, David Manolopoulos, Stuart Mackenzie, Harry Anderson, Alice Bowen (Manchester), Marilena di Valentin (Padova).
- Methodologies: Time-resolved EPR, pulsed dipolar spectroscopies (DEER), optical cavity-based instruments, confocal microscopy.
Her work has pioneered understanding of chemical compasses in birds’ retinal proteins and spin delocalization in molecular wires. She leads an optical spectroscopy group at Oxford, fostering interdisciplinary research bridging chemistry and quantum biology.
Scientific Awards:
- 2020 Tilden Award (Royal Society of Chemistry)
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2019)
Christiane co-directs CAESR, a Small Research Facility serving Oxford’s science community, and chairs the Royal Society of Chemistry’s ESR group since 2019.
