Dr Alia Middleton is a Senior Lecturer in Politics at the University of Surrey, serving as Co-Director of the Centre for Britain and Europe (CBE) and Undergraduate Admissions Tutor. She holds a PhD in Politics from the University of Edinburgh, alongside an MA (Hons) and MSc (Research) in Politics from the same institution.
Her research focuses on electoral politics, particularly UK party campaigning strategies, leader communication, and strategic political messaging. Key interests include leader visits to constituencies, effective candidate recruitment, and the impact of former Prime Ministers in parliamentary settings.
Dr Middleton’s work has been recognized with the Shaw McFie Lang Scholarship (2011). She teaches modules such as 'Debates in British Politics' and 'Political Communication', and her publications span academic journals and edited volumes on topics like by-election dynamics, leadership communication, and post-Brexit policy analysis.
Her involvement with the CBE highlights her expertise in EU-related issues, reflected in publications like 'EU Energy Security and Strategic Autonomy'. She actively engages in public discourse through events like the Jean Monnet Online Winter School and the Centre’s Summer School on British Foreign Policy post-Brexit.
