Dr. Ali S. Khan serves as Dean of the College of Public Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, holding the Richard Holland Presidential Chair. A retired U.S. Assistant Surgeon General, he previously directed CDC's Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response. His distinguished career focuses on bioterrorism preparedness, global health equity, emerging diseases, and climate change impacts on health.
Dr. Khan completed medical training at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, residency at University of Michigan, and earned an MPH from Emory University. His CDC career began in 1991 as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer, during which he designed CDC's global field epidemiology training program and contributed to major initiatives including the President's Malaria Initiative and polio eradication efforts.
He pioneered CDC's bioterrorism preparedness program following the 2001 anthrax attacks and has led responses to numerous global health emergencies including Ebola, SARS, avian influenza, and natural disasters. Dr. Khan created the Critical Agent list for biological terrorism preparedness and developed syndrome-based surveillance systems.
