Prof. Ali Hortaçsu is the Ralph and Mary Otis Isham Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago. His research focuses on assessing market efficiency through empirical analysis of micro-level market data to predict preferences and technological parameters underlying individual behavior. He evaluates how closely observed market outcomes align with theoretical efficiency benchmarks.
Education: B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University (exact years not specified), Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University (2001). Prior roles include visiting assistant professor and adjunct professor at Harvard, Northwestern, and Yale Universities. Served as Associate Professor (2001–2006) and Professor (2006–2014) at the University of Chicago before his current position.
Awards include the 2021 Koç University Rahmi M. Koç Science Medal for contributions to efficient markets and auction models, the 2006 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, and membership in the US Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Econometric Society. He currently serves as a researcher in the Industrial Organization Program at NBER.
