Ali Behdad is the John Charles Hillis Professor of Literature and Chair of the English Department at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Michigan, an M.A. from Middlebury College, and a B.A. from UC Berkeley.

His research focuses on Postcolonial Literature and Theory, Literary/Cultural Theory, and Victorian Travel Literature. He examines European representations of the Middle East and US immigration history through interdisciplinary lenses.
Key publications include Camera Orientalis (2016) on Middle Eastern photography and A Forgetful Nation (2005) analyzing US cultural identity. His co-edited work (2013) explores colonial photography.

His academic leadership includes directing the American Literature & Culture program and founding the Journal of Iranian and Persian History. He bridges literary analysis with visual culture studies across his scholarship.
