James Krippner is the Edmund and Margiana Stinnes Professor of Global Studies and Professor and Chair of History at Haverford College. His scholarly work bridges historiography, visual culture, and religious history with a focus on colonial Latin America and the South Atlantic world.

His research examines Christianity and colonialism in Brazil, Portugal, and the South Atlantic through case studies like Rio de Janeiro's Benedictine Monastery, while earlier work analyzed social history in Mexico via Paul Strand’s photography. He combines literary theory and interdisciplinary methods to deconstruct historical narratives.
Publications include three books and numerous articles. He co-curated a photography exhibition at the Aperture Gallery in New York and contributed to platforms like artdaily.com and the Wall Street Journal. He serves on the American Historical Association’s Friedrich Katz Prize Committee and the editorial board of Colonial Latin American Review.
