Ali Altaf Mian

Ali Altaf Mian is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Religion at the University of Florida. His research focuses on Islam in South Asia, Sufism, Islamic legal traditions (particularly the Hanafi School), gender and sexuality in contemporary Islam, and the interplay between religion and colonialism. He holds a B.A. in Philosophy and M.A. in English from the University of Louisville, and a Ph.D. in Religion from Duke University.

His current projects include manuscripts on Muslims in South Asia (contracted with Edinburgh University Press) and Surviving Modernity: Ashraf 'Ali Thanvi and the Genres of Muslim Self-Making in Colonial India. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of the American Academy of Religion (since 2017). His peer-reviewed articles and reviews are accessible online.
