Ali Akyol is an Associate Professor at the Telfer School of Management, University of Ottawa. He holds a PhD in Finance from the University of Alabama and a B.A. in Business Administration from Koç University, Istanbul. His research focuses on corporate governance, empirical corporate finance, and textual analysis, particularly examining board dynamics, financial misconduct, and shareholder value. His work has been recognized with awards, including the 2014 FMA Asia Best Paper Award for his study on director skills.
Key research interests include governance regulations, board composition, and the impact of disclosure on firm value. His funded research projects include studies on share repurchases, board connections during the pandemic, and high-frequency trading. He has taught at both the University of Ottawa and University of Melbourne across undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels in corporate finance and governance.
Notable grants include a SSHRC grant ($96,683) for studying strategic share repurchases and Telfer School grants on board interactions during crises and high-frequency trading costs. His research has appeared in top journals like the Journal of Financial Economics and Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis.
