Darlene Himick is a Full Professor and Vice-Dean, Faculty Affairs at the Telfer School of Management, University of Ottawa. She holds an L.L.B. from York University (Osgoode Hall Law School), an MBA from Dalhousie University, a Ph.D. in Accounting from the University of Calgary, and is a CFA Charterholder. Her roles include Senior Research Fellow with the Shareholder Association for Research and Education (SHARE) in Vancouver.
Her research focuses on pension accounting, responsible investing, and the use of experts in accounting standard-setting. Key areas include pension fund governance, qualitative research methodologies, and sociological theories of accounting. She explores intersections between accounting and actuarial professions, as well as sustainability issues like fossil fuel divestment and retirement plan accounting.
Recent publications address housing literacy, regulatory uncertainty in CSR, corporate accountability during the pandemic, and climate change impacts. Her work appears in journals like Critical Perspectives on Accounting, Journal of Business Ethics, and Sustainability.
Himick has secured grants from SSHRC and FQRSC for projects on retirement plan accounting, fossil fuel divestment, and modern slavery disclosures. She co-leads research on individual shareholder activism and ethical accounting practices.
Her academic contributions span teaching (financial accounting, accounting theory) and interdisciplinary engagement, blending legal, actuarial, and financial perspectives to address societal challenges.
