Dr. Alfred El Khoury is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Münster, where he contributes to the DFG-funded ALEA project (Arabian Literature 1100-1800) focused on the comprehensive edition of Ibn Nubātah al-Miṣrī's works (1287–1366). Previously, he held research and teaching positions at the American University of Beirut, Friedrich-Alexander University, and Otto-Friedrich University.
His academic background includes:
- Doctorate in Arabic Studies, Otto-Friedrich University, Bamberg (2017-2023)
- Master of Arts in Arabic Language and Literature, American University of Beirut (2013-2015)
- License in Arabic Language and Literature, Lebanese University, Beirut (2010-2013)
El Khoury's research centers on Arabic poetry, philosophy of language in the Arabic-speaking world, pre-modern Arabic literary theory (Naqd and Balāġah traditions), metaphorology, and 20th-century Arab Surrealism. His work investigates how classical Arabic poetic concepts, especially metaphor, interact with modern literary movements, revealing continuities and ruptures in Arabic literary history.
Analysis of his publications indicates a dual focus: critical engagement with modern Arabic literary figures (notably Unsi al-Hajj's surrealist experiments) and scholarly examination of premodern theoretical frameworks. His articles demonstrate interdisciplinary methodology, bridging literary analysis, intellectual history, and comparative studies between Arabic and Western traditions.
Within the ALEA research center, El Khoury participates in the Leibniz Prize-winning team dedicated to creating a digital critical edition of Ibn Nubātah's corpus, contributing to innovative approaches in premodern Arabic literary studies through digital humanities.
