Dr. Andreas Herdt is a researcher at the University of Münster's Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies, contributing to the ALEA project (a DFG-funded Leibniz Prize Research Center) focused on the Complete Edition of Ibn Nubāta al-Miṣrī's Works. His expertise spans Islamic eschatology, Western Arabian history during the Almoravid/Almohad/Nasrid periods, classical Arabic literature, figurative art, and contemporary Arabic lexicography.
Education:
- MA in Arabic and Romance Philology, University of Göttingen (1995-2003), thesis on historical content of official Almohad letters
- Arabic language course, University of Jordan, Amman (1998-1999)
- PhD, University of Göttingen (2009) on Almohad letters as fragments of Maghrebi political-literary history
Herdt's current research centers on two major projects: Dalīl al-muḥtār bi-durr aš-šawāhid al-muḫtār (annotated collection of figurative classical Arabic usage evidence) and Iḍrām lahīb aš-šauq (annotated selection of Arabic roots/derivatives). His work bridges historical analysis of medieval Arabic texts with linguistic studies of script evolution, emphasizing neglected literary-political fragments from the Maghreb.
Previously serving as research assistant at Göttingen (2003-2007, 2009-2011) and Library Head at Marburg's Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies (2011-2014), he has taught modern Arabic language courses (2004-2011). As a core ALEA team member, he advances digital humanities approaches to Arabic manuscript studies while maintaining active DAAD scholarship connections from his Tunis research stay (2006).
