Alexis Jemal is Associate Professor at Silberman School of Social Work (CUNY) and affiliated faculty with CUNY Graduate Center's Social Welfare PhD program. Licensed Clinical Social Worker and attorney developing critical social work frameworks. CUNY Mellon Faculty Diversity Fellow with expertise in anti-racist interventions.
Research focuses on:
- Critical consciousness theory and measurement
- Liberation-based social work praxis
- Trauma-informed racial justice interventions
- Transformative approaches to mental health
Recent publications (2022-2025) emphasize anti-racist methodologies, critical dialogue processes, and innovative applications of theatre in social work education. Work demonstrates consistent integration of micro-macro practice dimensions through participatory approaches.
Developed the Integrated Transformative Potential Intervention Development (InTrePID) method and Critical Dialogue Cornerstone framework. Leads Anti-Racism Community Collaborative organizing initiative.
Principal investigator on NIH/NIMH-funded studies on critical consciousness development and community health interventions. Recipient of PSC-CUNY Enhanced Research Award and Jack Goody Award.
Teaches health/mental health courses integrating critical race theory and social justice frameworks.
