Alexis Brieant is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychological Science at the University of Vermont (UVM), affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on understanding how adversity and social determinants of health impact neurodevelopment and mental health in children and adolescents. She integrates developmental science, clinical psychology, and neuroscience to identify risk and resilience factors for targeted interventions.
Education: B.A. in Psychology from SUNY Geneseo (2015), M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Tech (2017, 2020), followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University (2020–2023).
Research Interests:
- Adversity and environmental stressors in youth development
- Neurodevelopmental mechanisms linking adversity to mental health
- Resilience factors and intervention targets to reduce health disparities.
Her FERN Lab uses neuroimaging (fMRI), behavioral tasks, and structural equation modeling to explore these topics.
Publications: Focus on brain-behavior relationships, socioeconomic status, and longitudinal studies like the ABCD Study. Recent work examines community cohesion, climate change impacts, and familial depression risk through neural circuitry.
Labs/Teams: Leads the FERN Lab, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to human development challenges.
