معرفی
Alexandru Schiopu, MD PhD, is Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer at Lund University, Sweden, where he leads the Cardiac Inflammation Research Group. He also serves as consultant physician, researcher in the national strategic initiatives EXODIAB (Excellence of Diabetes Research in Sweden) and EpiHealth, and teaching faculty for the Medical Programme.
Education & Clinical Training
- Medical degree and PhD (exact titles/years not disclosed in source)
- Board-certified consultant in cardiology
Research Focus
Dr Schiopu’s work is centred on innate immunity and inflammatory mechanisms driving cardiovascular disease. A major theme is the damage-associated molecular pattern S100A8/A9 (calprotectin)—from molecular mechanisms in neutrophils and macrophages, through experimental myocardial infarction and myocarditis models, to large-scale clinical cohorts. His group investigates therapeutic blockade of S100A8/A9 and related pathways (e.g., IL-1 signalling via IL1RAP) to reduce cardiac inflammation, preserve contractile function, and promote reparative angiogenesis after ischemic injury.
Additional interests include biomarker discovery using plasma proteomics & metabolomics (SCAPIS cohort), neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in sepsis-related cardiac dysfunction, and systems-level evaluation of cardiac rehabilitation programmes across Sweden.
Scientific Output & Impact
Since 2015 he has authored >70 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals such as Circulation: Heart Failure, European Journal of Pharmacology, Journal of Advanced Research, and Cardiovascular Research. His collaborative network spans >8 countries and is reflected in high citation rates and frequent media coverage (news outlets, social media).
Grants & Projects
- Evaluation and improvement of secondary prevention after myocardial infarction (dissertation project, ongoing since 2017)
- Mechanistic and therapeutic studies on the role of the S100A9 alarmin in cardiac inflammation (PhD project 2020-2024, main supervisor)
- Neutrophil mediators in the pathogenesis and prognosis of cardiovascular disease (PhD project 2016-2020, main supervisor)
Supervision & Teaching
Dr Schiopu has supervised three doctoral theses to completion and is currently supervising one additional PhD student. He is a core teacher in the Medical Programme at Lund University, integrating translational cardiovascular research into graduate and postgraduate curricula.
Laboratory & Team
He heads the Cardiac Inflammation Research Group, comprising post-docs, PhD students, and research nurses. The group is embedded in the Skåne University Hospital infrastructure, facilitating seamless translation from bench to bedside.
