Azhar Maqbool is a Lecturer in Cardiovascular Medicine at the School of Medicine, University of Leeds. He works in the Discovery & Translational Science Department at LIGHT Laboratories, focusing on cardiac injury mechanisms and translational research.
- Education: BSc (Hons) in Physiology from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, PhD in Cardiovascular Studies from the University of Leeds.
Research Interests: His work investigates extracellular matrix (matricellular) proteins in adverse cardiac remodelling, emphasizing their roles in inflammation, fibrosis, and cell survival post-myocardial infarction. He also develops small molecule therapeutics and MRI-based imaging tools to target and detect these proteins.
Teaching Responsibilities: Module Lead for undergraduate modules Cardiovascular Pumps Pipes and Electrics and Cardiovascular Molecular Pharmacology, Deputy Programme Director for the intercalated BSc Cardiovascular Medicine programme, and personal tutor for Year 1-2 medical students.
