Alexandre Vieira is a Brazilian musician and Research Fellow at the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence, University of Bayreuth. He holds a Master's in Music Performance from Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA) and specializes in upright bass, electric bass, guitar, and percussion. His work explores Afrodiasporic arts, focusing on vocal-instrumental integration in African-rooted music traditions, including jazz, improvisation, and Brazilian folk music.
His research project, THE MELODIC-RHYTHMIC CONUNDRUM OF AFRICAN (DIASPORA) MUSIC, investigates the rhythmic-melodic unit in African-based music performance, emphasizing creative connectivity between oralities, corporeities, and instruments. This includes cross-genre analysis in jazz and adaptations of African traditions within Brazilian folk contexts.
Vieira has collaborated with notable artists and projects, such as Itamar Assumpção's Isso Ainda Dá Repercussão, Roberto Mendes' Chulas na Feira, and the Whale Whispering project by Michaela Harrison. He is self-taught in most instruments and has contributed to recordings like Dança do Tempo (2023) and Afrodiaspórico (Luan Sodré Trio).
Selected publications include his master's thesis A Integração da Voz com o Contrabaixo Acústico: Criação e Interpretação and the book chapter A Relação Vocal Instrumental nas Artes Musicais Afrodiaspóricas e Seus Processos Criativos, alongside experimental video projects FREEPLAY #1 and #2.
