Alexandre Abreu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at ISEG (Lisbon School of Economics & Management, University of Lisbon). He is a researcher at CEsA – Center for Studies on Africa and Development and coordinates the PhD Program in Development Studies at the University of Lisbon. His research focuses on political economy of development, inequality, and poverty, with notable work on Portugal’s inequality dynamics and resilience in fragile states.
Abreu holds a PhD from SOAS, University of London (2012) and a Master’s in Development and International Cooperation from ISEG (2006). His professional experience includes roles at The Economist Intelligence Unit, Overseas Development Institute, and advisory work for Timor-Leste’s government and the g7+ Secretariat.
His research publications span topics like Eurozone inflation, resilience in fragile contexts, and critical analyses of development indices. He has supervised over 20 Master’s theses addressing global challenges such as urban poverty, climate vulnerability, and economic inequality. Abreu is also active in public discourse through op-eds in Expresso and editorial roles at Mundo Crítico and Le Monde Diplomatique.
He currently serves on the Ethics Committee of ISEG and the Executive Committee of EADI, reflecting his commitment to ethical academic practices and global development research networks.
