Alexandra Tate, PhD, is a sociologist and Lecturer in the Department of Comparative Human Development at the University of Chicago, where she also serves as Director of Research in the Section of Hospital Medicine. Her work bridges medical sociology and health services research, focusing on clinical decision-making, end-of-life care, and the doctor-patient relationship. Dr. Tate’s research leverages qualitative and quantitative methods to explore how institutional structures and communication practices influence health outcomes, with a focus on reducing disparities and improving patient-centered care. She holds a PhD in Sociology from UCLA and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Chicago’s Center for Health and the Social Sciences.

Research interests include medical ethics, aging, oncology, and mixed-methods approaches to studying healthcare interactions. Her funded projects address advance care planning, fragmented healthcare systems, and communication in acute care settings. She is an editorial board member of the Journal of Health and Social Behavior and has received awards including the National Institute on Aging Loan Repayment Award and the UCLA Excellence in Teaching Award.
Teaching includes courses on death and dying, health policy, and sociology of healthcare at the University of Chicago and Harris School of Public Policy. Current research focuses on improving care coordination for high-need patients and understanding organ donation decision-making in neurocritical care.
Grants and funding include roles as Co-Investigator on projects funded by the National Institute on Aging, National Institute of General Medical Sciences, and the University of Chicago’s Institute for Translational Medicine. Her work has been published in Qualitative Health Research, Journal of Health and Social Behavior, and Social Science & Medicine.
