Dr Alexandra Fanghanel is an Associate Professor of Criminology at the University of Greenwich, affiliated with the School of Law and Criminology within the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She joined the university in 2015 and currently co-leads the Gender Deviance and Society Research Group while serving as Programme Leader for the BA Criminology and Criminal Justice degree. Her research focuses on fear of crime, gender, sexuality, and public space, with notable contributions to feminist criminology and discourse analysis.
Her academic journey includes a PhD completed in 2011, followed by roles as a researcher and lecturer in Anthropology, Sociology, and Criminology. She holds degrees of BA, MSc, and PhD, along with SFHEA (Fellow of the Higher Education Academy). Her work interrogates how fear of crime intersects with gendered spatial practices and challenges prevailing rape culture narratives. Key themes include the spatialization of violence, sexual vigilance, and the discursive construction of 'proper subjects.'
Fanghanel's publications span journals such as Hypatia, Geoforum, and Feminist Criminology, addressing topics like naked protests, BDSM consent dynamics, and SlutWalk activism. Her recent work explores breaking rape culture through Deleuze-Guattarian 'war machine' theory. She collaborates with institutions like the University of New England (Australia) and ISCTE-IUL (Lisbon), reflecting her international scholarly network.
Her research interests include discourse analysis, youth subcultures, affect studies, and knowledge-power dynamics. While no explicit awards are listed, her prolific publication record and leadership roles highlight her academic impact. She advises students and contributes to curricula shaping criminological education and research.
Fanghanel's work extends beyond academia through engagement with activist movements and critical analyses of public policy, emphasizing the need to reimagine safety discourses to combat systemic gendered violence.
