Ash Barnes (they/them) is a Research Fellow at the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre and a lecturer/tutor in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Tasmania. Their work bridges criminology, gender studies, and social justice with a focus on trauma-informed approaches.

Research Focus: Ash investigates normalized violence in Australian punk/hardcore music scenes through feminist and social psychology lenses, analyzing rape myths, substance use, and social capital. They also lead the TALK-TBI Project to improve public understanding of traumatic brain injury lived experiences.
Research Outputs (2021-2025): Ash has published extensively on intersectional violence against LGBTQ+ communities, disability rights, and environmental crime. Their 2024 book Sexual and Physical Violence in Australian Punk and Hardcore Music Scenes challenges romanticized subcultural narratives.
Teaching & Supervision: Ash lectures on Crime and Criminal Justice, Juvenile Justice, Gender Studies, and Social Research methods. They advocate for culturally safe classrooms, flexible assessments, and compassionate pedagogy that acknowledges trauma's lifelong impacts.
