Dr. Alexandra Bögner is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Sustainability Research at the University of Basel's Faculty of Humanities. She works under Prof. Janina Grabs on the EXPECT-AGRI project, investigating the implementation of laws on due diligence in supply chains.
Dr. Bögner earned her doctorate at the Centre of European Union Studies (SCEUS) at the University of Salzburg. Her dissertation, "Leveraging Trade for Climate," examines how the EU uses policy instruments to promote climate targets among trading partners. She holds a Master's degree in International Relations from the Free University of Berlin, the Humboldt University of Berlin, and the University of Potsdam. During her doctoral studies, she was a visiting scholar at the University of Konstanz and the University of Antwerp.
Dr. Bögner's research focuses on the intersection of international trade policy and climate action. Her work examines how economic interests shape climate discussions within preferential trade agreements and how due diligence laws can improve sustainability in global supply chains. She brings expertise from both academic research and practical policy experience, having worked as a trade policy advisor in the private sector and as a research associate at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP).
Dr. Bögner's recent publication in the Review of International Political Economy analyzes how conventional trade interests influence climate discussions at Preferential Trade Agreement committees. Her research contributes to understanding the complex relationship between trade liberalization and climate action, with implications for EU policy design.
Dr. Bögner has received recognition for her work on the effectiveness of private sustainability governance. As part of the Sustainability Research Group, she collaborates with colleagues including Lucia Casalegno and Lesly Nassila who recently joined the team as PhD candidates.
Dr. Bögner works within the EXPECT-AGRI project framework investigating the political economy of expectations in agri-food sustainability transformations. The Sustainability Research Group focuses on understanding transformative processes, best practices, and potential impacts of sustainability governance in agricultural sectors, with attention to questions of justice and inclusion.
