Alexandra Brewis is a Regents Professor and President’s Professor at Arizona State University’s School of Human Evolution and Social Change. She previously directed the school (2010-2017) and founded the Center for Global Health. Her research focuses on global health challenges, including obesity stigma, water insecurity, and gender disparities. Brewis leads the Culture, Health, Environment, and Language (CHELab) Lab, collaborating on cross-cultural projects such as the Small World/Big Bodies initiative and Global Ethnohydrology Study.
Education: PhD in Anthropology (University of Arizona, 1992), MA (University of Auckland, 1988), BA (University of Auckland, 1986). Awards include AAAS Fellowship and the Conrad M. Arensberg Award for contributions to anthropological science.
Key research themes include biocultural mechanisms of health disparities, water insecurity’s mental health impacts, and innovative methods for development program evaluation. Over 220 journal articles and 8 authored books, including the award-winning Lazy, Crazy, and Disgusting: Stigma and the Undoing of Global Health.
Teaching includes courses on global health, food culture, and anthropological methods. Active in training undergraduate and graduate students through research practica and collaborative lab projects.
