Alexander Stark

Dr. Alexander Stark is an Adjunct Professor at the Medical University of Vienna and a Senior Scientist at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) in Vienna, Austria. His research focuses on systems biology, genomics, and gene regulation, with a particular emphasis on enhancers, promoters, and transcriptional regulatory elements. He has held leadership roles at IMP since 2008 and is actively involved in teaching and mentoring.

• Education: PhD in Bioinformatics (EMBL & University of Köln, Germany), Diplom in Biochemistry (University of Tübingen, Germany), Abitur (Besigheim, Germany).

Stark’s research bridges computational biology and molecular genetics, utilizing bioinformatics approaches to dissect transcriptional regulatory mechanisms in Drosophila and beyond. His work has significant implications for understanding gene regulation in development and disease. He has contributed to advancements in CRMs (Cis-Regulatory Modules) and RNAome analysis.

Stark has secured multiple competitive grants, including two ERC grants and funding from FWF and WWTF. He is listed as an inventor on two patents and has served as a lecturer in prestigious courses like the CSHL Gene Expression Course and GRNs in Development.
