Alexander Shekhonin is a Professor and current Lead Expert at the Department of Academic Affairs at ITMO University. With a career spanning over four decades, he has held various roles including Head of the Department of Applied and Computer Optics (2000-2011) and Vice Rector for Teaching and Studies (2011-2016). He is a corresponding member of the International Higher Education Academy of Sciences.

His research focuses on applied optics and the design of optical systems, alongside pioneering work in educational structure and quality assurance in higher education. He has authored over 110 scientific and educational publications.

Shekhonin has contributed to modernizing optical engineering curricula and developing remote learning technologies, influencing both national and international educational standards in instrumentation and optics.
As a leader in optical engineering education, he has shaped academic policies at ITMO University and chaired methodological associations for Russian universities.
