Alexander O. Hsu is an Assistant Professor of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame's Keough School of Global Affairs. He serves as the Director of Undergraduate Studies at the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies and as an Academic Advisor at the Ansari Institute for Global Engagement with Religion. Additionally, he co-manages the Faith in the Story: Trialogues for Enhancing Religious Literacy project.
His research focuses on the history of religions, particularly early Buddhist scriptures in medieval China, using interdisciplinary approaches from manuscript studies, genre theory, and cultural history. He teaches courses such as Connecting Asia: Pasts, Presents, Futures, Introduction to Buddhism, and Engaging Religions: An Introduction to Religion and Global Affairs.
Hsu earned his PhD in History of Religions from the University of Chicago Divinity School. His current book project investigates how medieval Chinese Buddhists used anthologies to navigate the vastness of their scriptural canon through the lens of religious reading practices.
