Alexander Monge-Naranjo is a Full-time Professor and Head of the Department of Economics at the European University Institute (EUI), a position he has held since 2021. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1999) and has held academic positions at Northwestern University, Penn State, INCAE Business School, and visiting roles at institutions like the University of Tokyo and Goethe University Frankfurt. His research focuses on human capital's role in macroeconomic outcomes, structural transformation, resource misallocation, and international trade. He explores topics such as education financing, labor markets, economic growth, and urban development. His work bridges macroeconomic theory with empirical analysis, addressing global challenges like income inequality and development pathways. Monge-Naranjo is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.
His research interests include macroeconomics, growth, development economics, international trade, and labor economics. He investigates how human capital investments affect aggregate economic outcomes, including income distribution, urbanization, and cross-country disparities. Recent work examines intergenerational mobility in Africa, global imbalances, and policies for attracting foreign expertise in developing nations. His publications appear in top journals like Econometrica and the American Economic Review.
Monge-Naranjo advises numerous doctoral students and contributes to research clusters on labor markets, inequality, and global economic thinking. His ongoing projects address education policies, technological change impacts, and historical patterns of inequality. He actively engages with policy discussions on education finance and structural transformation.
