Dr. Alexander Monea is an Associate Professor at George Mason University, jointly appointed in the English Department and Cultural Studies Program within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. His research examines the cultural impacts of digital media, focusing on algorithmic bias, heteronormative content moderation, and the intersection of technology with identity politics. He is the author of *The Digital Closet: How the Internet Became Straight* (MIT Press, 2022), which critiques how LGBTQ+ content is marginalized online through opaque algorithms and censorship mechanisms.
Education: PhD in Communication, Rhetoric, & Digital Media (North Carolina State University, 2016); MA in Communication (Bowling Green State University, 2012); BA in English (Walsh University, 2010).
Grants include a 2020 NSF Grant (Co-PI) for ethical algorithm education, 2021 Curriculum Impact Grants for anti-racist curriculum development and an Ethics & AI minor, and a 2018 Faculty Research Award. He serves as Ethics, Equity, and Trust Area Editor for *Data & Policy* and teaches courses on cultural studies, digital media, and science/technology critique.
