Professor Alexander Milner is a Professor of River Ecosystems at the University of Birmingham’s School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, where he has served for 15 years. He established the Environmental Science and Environmental Management degrees and currently leads the Masters in River Environmental Management. His research focuses on river ecosystems in alpine and Arctic environments, including long-term studies in Glacier Bay and Denali National Parks in Alaska. Key research themes include stream succession, glacial influences on river systems, and climate change impacts on ecological structure and function.
He holds academic leadership roles, including membership in the European Science Foundation peer review panel, North American Benthological Society committees, and the NERC Arctic Programme Advisory Group. His editorial roles include BMC Ecology and River Research and Applications. He has authored/co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed articles since 2020, with a focus on hydroecology, climate adaptation, and biodiversity responses to environmental changes.
Professor Milner’s education includes a PhD in Aquatic Ecology (University of London), MSc in Applied Hydrobiology, and BSc in Biological Sciences (University of Aston). He teaches courses such as River Ecology, Ecological Systems, and River Restoration. His grants and advisory work emphasize sustainable management of glacially influenced river systems and Arctic ecosystems.
