Alexander Maas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology at the University of Idaho, part of the College of Agricultural & Life Sciences. His research focuses on the valuation and allocation of natural resources, particularly water, and the economic implications of resource management policies. He holds a Ph.D. from Colorado State University and master’s degree from the University of Connecticut.
Maas’ work bridges applied economics with environmental and resource management, addressing topics like urban water policy, climate change adaptation, and the economic impacts of environmental disasters. He has collaborated with utilities and stakeholders on water conservation programs and published in journals such as Journal of Environmental Management and Applied Health Economics and Health Policy.
His recent research explores policy effectiveness in wildfire management, soil health practices in agriculture, and the unintended consequences of conservation programs. Maas has received multiple awards, including the 2018 Western Agricultural Economics Association Outstanding Research Prize and the 2016 IEAM Best Paper Award for coastal conservation work.
He teaches courses on water economics and policy analysis, and his interdisciplinary approach integrates behavioral economics with quantitative methods to evaluate resource trade-offs between industrial, agricultural, and municipal sectors.
