Alexander Ludwig is a Full-time Professor of Economics at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, joining in September 2024 on leave from Goethe University Frankfurt. His research focuses on the macroeconomic impacts of demographic change, wealth distribution, social insurance design, and education policies. He has published in leading journals such as the Journal of Monetary Economics and American Economic Journal.
Current affiliations include leadership roles in the DFG-funded research unit on Macroeconomic Implications of Intra-Household Decision Making and the EU Horizon 2022 project SUSTAINWELL. He directs the ICIR and collaborates with institutions like CEPR, SAFE, and ZEW. His work integrates quantitative methods with policy analysis, addressing topics like inequality, migration, and health economics.
Research interests span demographic shifts, intergenerational mobility, and the welfare state. Recent projects include studies on egg-freezing technology policy and African intergenerational mobility. Ludwig advises several PhD students and has held teaching roles at Cologne University (2009–2014) and Goethe University (2014–2024).
