Dr. Alexander Lorenz is a Senior Lecturer in Fungal Genetics at the University of Aberdeen, UK, affiliated with the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences & Nutrition and the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS). He holds a PhD in Genetics (University of Vienna, 2003) and an MRes in Botany (University of Vienna, 2000), both with distinction. His research focuses on fungal genetics, Candida auris pathogenesis, and meiotic recombination mechanisms.
Key roles include Programme Lead for the BSc Molecular and Cellular Biology, Chair of the Foresterhill Biological Safety Committee, and Biological Safety Officer. He has held postdoctoral positions at the University of Oxford and the University of Vienna, and was an Erwin Schrödinger Fellow (FWF, 2005–2007). His work spans molecular cell biology, microbial pathogenesis, and genetic recombination processes.
Research interests include understanding Candida auris’s virulence mechanisms, drug resistance evolution, and the molecular basis of meiotic recombination. He has supervised numerous graduate and undergraduate students, contributing to over 50 publications in journals like PLoS Pathogens and Science. His grants include Wellcome Trust and MRC funding for projects on fungal genetics and antifungal resistance.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on Molecular Biology of the Cell, Genetics, and Molecular Microbiology. He is an Associate Editor for Critical Reviews in Microbiology and FEMS Yeast Research, and a reviewer for over 50 scientific journals.
