Prof. Dr. Alexander Loewer serves as Professor and Dean at the Technical University of Darmstadt, leading the "Systems biology of the stress response" research group. His work bridges quantitative single-cell biology and mathematical modeling to investigate cellular stress mechanisms with direct implications for cancer research and therapeutic development.
Loewer's research focuses on three interconnected stress response pathways:
- p53 Signaling: Dynamics of tumor suppressor networks in genotoxic stress and cancer prevention
- DNA Damage Response: Real-time quantification of double-strand break repair kinetics in individual cells
- SMAD-Mediated Signaling: TGFb superfamily signal transduction in breast cancer progression and vascular diseases
Loewer mentors five doctoral candidates and collaborates internationally through the DFG-ANR funded project DDRphosphoclus with Francois-Xavier Theillet's group, integrating structural biology with systems approaches to study phosphorylation clusters in DNA damage response. His laboratory secures competitive transnational research grants focusing on stress signaling network dysregulation.
Based in Darmstadt's biology building, the research team comprises biologists, computational scientists, and technical specialists developing innovative single-cell methodologies. The lab maintains active partnerships with French research institutions and emphasizes translational applications of stress response mechanisms in disease contexts.
